Medicare 101

Medicare Part A is a component of the federal health insurance program that provides coverage for a range of hospital services to eligible individuals, including hospice care, skilled nursing facility care, and home health care. It is often referred to as “hospital insurance” and is available to individuals who are 65 or older, those with certain disabilities, and those with end-stage renal disease. Part A benefits cover inpatient hospital stays, including necessary supplies, medications, diagnostic tests, and physician services. It also includes limited coverage for skilled nursing care and hospice services. Part A typically does not cover routine care, such as annual check-ups or prescription drugs, but it may provide some coverage for preventive services and certain medical equipment or supplies. Some beneficiaries may be required to pay a deductible or coinsurance amounts for covered services.

Medicare Part B is a voluntary outpatient medical insurance program that is part of the federal Medicare program in the United States. It covers medically necessary services and supplies that are not covered by Part A, which is hospital insurance. Part B helps cover services like doctor visits, lab tests, and preventive screenings, as well as certain medical equipment such as wheelchairs and oxygen equipment. It also covers some medications that are administered in a doctor’s office or clinic setting. Beneficiaries must pay a monthly premium for Part B coverage, as well as an annual deductible and coinsurance for most services. Part B is available to anyone who is eligible for Medicare, and enrollment is typically automatic for individuals who are already receiving Social Security benefits.

Medicare Part D is a prescription drug benefit program offered by the federal government to Medicare beneficiaries. It was introduced in 2006 to help seniors and people with disabilities pay for the cost of their prescription drugs. Medicare Part D is optional and requires a monthly premium payment, which varies depending on the plan chosen. The plan covers a range of prescription drugs, including brand-name and generic drugs, and each plan has its own list of covered medications, which is known as a formulary. Beneficiaries can choose from a variety of Part D plans offered by private insurance companies, and the cost of the plan may vary based on geographic location and the specific benefits provided. There may also be additional costs such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for prescription drugs.
